I am an adult who wants to learn German. But which course to use?

Can anyone recommend a german course they have used successfully? Lots of courses make great claims, but I want to know what actually works. Spoken only (e.g. Michel Thomas) or textbook-based (e.g. a high-school course). Can you recommend one?

I don’t know where you are from ..

I haven’t used the German course but I am doing spanish and the open university do some fantastic courses with tutor support and contrary to what some might think they do do beginners German. I think the courses can be got free if you are on benefits and you will get a recognised qualification like I am getting a Spanish certificate after 2 courses. It isn’t just degrees.
    Give it a shot!

Far better, if you can, to do a course at your local college or uni. Much more successful to do it "live" so to speak. Why not ring your local college and see if they’re doing any evening classes?

For me, it’s better to hear just people speak in that language, and it catches on much quicker than learning it by myself trying to learn it out of a book.

And through my experience, I would just recommend taking a college course (I actually got out of high school, class of 07, and haven’t been to college just yet. I’m living in Germany at the moment, though)

I had 4 years of German in high school, and I’m sure you can find better German teachers in the Universities.
That’s the way I would go. Plus, if you are just going ot be learning by yourself, you might become unmotivated and just set down that rosetta stone and not look at it for months. That’s what I did with my Russian books.

I find it eaiser to learn when you take a class. That is my recommendation.
