How hard is it to learn German?

I plan on taking German in college in the Fall and I was wondering how difficult a language it is to learn. I’m alright with pronunciation but the only German I know is the national anthem and some not so nice words. I have wanted to learn german for several years and now I finally have the opportunity as it was not offered in my high school. Can anyone tell me if it is a terribly difficult language to grasp and perhaps any particularly tricky areas?

Depends on how dedicated you are. I speak German, and when I first started it was over whelming (being my second language). The pronunciation is difficult, but if you practice when you’re by yourself you can get it pretty good. For example, three letters have umlauts. These are difficult to pronounce and English foreigners are known for failing on their German "R." English speakers usually don’t roll their R because it is difficult. Unlike a Spanish R, the German R is rolled in the back of the throat. It’s like gargling, but again you get used to it (or you could ignore it like most people). The hardest part for me is case and gender. There are masculine, feminine, neuter, and plural genders. There are also 4 cases. It’s easy to get the vocabulary and is also easy with the verbs. There are five cases for verbs in the german language: present, past, perfect, past perfect, and future. Word order is different, but easy to over come. It took me about six months to become comfortable and effective in learning the language (given I was in a high school class with 45 minutes a day). In a more intense class it will probably not take as long. German reminds me a lot of early modern English, it’s like poetry if you ignore the pronunciation. I think it’s a quite beautiful language regardless of it’s stereotype. I hope you choose German, if you are serious about it you will be exposed to some of the nicest people in the world and a world of literature that is unfathomably beautiful.

Will starting to learn german interfere with my french?

I currently learn french in school, but i want to learn german during the summer. Will learning german interfere with french? Thanks.

no. they are two completely different languages!
Many schools offer two MFL to students to learn at the same time.
It’s quit easy once you start understanding the basics of both language and anyway you already do french so it’ll be easier.

What is the best and fastest way to learn German?

I already know Spanish and English (I know how to write and speak, and I’m very fluent in both languages), but I really want to learn how to write and speak German. What is the best and fastest way to learn this language? I live in Puerto Rico and there is no German community or place to learn the language, so if you have any recommendations. I can’t go to live in Germany, by the way. What can I use to learn german? Any recommendations?

It is possible to learn German for free, however I do not recommend it. The problem is that free websites / free programs are only willing to offer so much. There would just be a dis organization of information that wouldn’t go together very easily.

How long does it take to learn the german language?

I am 15 years old and I speak english. I lived in USA all my life. I want to learn german but what ways are there and what is the average length of time to learn it? What if I go on a game that only has german words will I adapt to it?

Depending on exposure, effort/motivation, and aptitude, most people can learn to speak German within 6 to 9 months, but we are talking relatively basic here. German grammar and syntax are quite hard for some people to get their mind around, and differ quite considerably between spoken and written German. In my experience only a prolonged stay in an environment of native speakers and extensive reading makes you really proficient.

Every language learner needs to develop two different aspects:
1. receptive, i.e understanding in speech and writing, and
2. productive, i.e. writing and speaking in the foreign language.

Both of them are only learned by doing, the second being the more difficult and more important one. Contrary to common belief, translating from your native language into the second one is not really needed. It is helpful for some people, though. Likewise, a game might help you to get into it, but there really is no other way than to write in German yourself. Speaking comes later – in a conversation the topic might have changed, or a painfullly long silence developed, by the time you find the words to answer.
