Can people who speak Swiss German understand people who speak standard German?
I am visiting my family for the first time in Switzerland and i am taking german lessons. I no swiss german is different than standard german, but will they be able to understand me at all?
There’s a Standard Swiss German, which is closer to Standard Hochdeutsch spoken in most parts of Germany, but in reality, most German-speaking Swiss speak various dialects of Swiss German, different from Standard Swiss German proper. Most Germans would have difficult comprehending these various dialects, but in conversation with Austrians and Germans, most German-speaking Swiss will speak in Standard Swiss German. Do you like tennis? Here’s a funny video of Roger Federer speaking in charming, but guttural Swiss German:
The subtitles show the difference in pronunciations. I don’t think there’s any way to illustrate these differences in the English language, the dialects of which are more uniform, whereas the German was affected by regional circumstances for a longer period of time.

I hate German lessons in School…?
Okay, so I did a silly thing, I chose German as one of my GCSE’s. It really felt like a good idea at the time, because before my GCSE’s i was studying German (obviously not at such a high level) and I felt that I would be able to cope with it and enjoy it as a GCSE, but it’s been a total disaster. I hate my teacher, and she does not like me either. I can never understand what she is talking about when she talks in German so most of the time I switch off and just lean on my desk. Grrrrr I just hate it. Does anyone else hate german lessons, or German in general. I have no obligation to German people though, don’t get me wrong.
I hate German lessons and my teacher.
But I’ve always thought it would be quite cool to speak another language.
My teacher hates me too.
Today we had to do a practise German writing GCSE and then swap our books with other people to check for mistakes. I swapped my book with a girl that the teacher loves. The teacher goes up to her and says "I should check the last sentence, it’s really badly done and has loads of mistakes."
I mean JESUS CHRIST. She predicted me a B. Why be such a b*tch?!
I only chose German because my school says you have to do a language, and French makes no sense to me, hence my choosing German.
Was Princess Diana a clever pupil at school geography lessons if she confused a Greek family with a German one?
Princess Diana said she "should never have married into a German family" during her divorce from Prince Charles, her lawyer said in book extracts published by a newspaper on Sunday.
I’ll wager she was often the one standing at the back of the class with a pointy hat (upon which the letter D is clearly visible) on her head. But let us be fair Mr Churchill, she got it partly right. German, Greek/Danish. I would award her 50%, which was a pass when I went to school. But never-the-less, indeed she was, a dill.

Learning the German Language – The Secret of German Language Learning
By Michael Meier
If you want to learn the german language then this article is for you. You will discover the secret of German language learning. It is what separates those who learn to speak German quickly from those who fail to do so, even though they invest a lot of effort into their practice.
First of all, it should be noted that German is actually a language that is comparatively easy to learn for native English speakers. Because there are many related words in both languages, and the historical connection is still possible to see.
Take for example words like the English and. In German it is und. Other examples of these word relationships are fish, Fisch; paper, Papier; guarantee, Garantie; water, Wasser; bread, Brot; arm, Arm; nose, Nase; red, rot. Sure, these words have often different spellings and different pronunciations, but they are still a lot more similarities than to languages like Chinese, Japanese, Hindi and so on.
But the ultimate secret of German language learning is that you always want to learn phrases instead of single words. Because language really is used almost exclusively in phrases. When you learn phrases, it will become a lot easier to actually speak German faster.
Have you ever tried to learn a language by studying vocabulary and grammar? Well, it does not work so well. Because vocabulary mainly consists of single word or two-word combinations. But it still takes a lot of mental processing to then turn these individual vocabulary words into sentences that you can use in conversations.
Learning grammatical rules is even worse – because then you will have to process all kinds of rules before forming a sentence in your head. It’s almost like having to do a mathematical calculation in your head every time before you speak a sentence.
When you learn phrases instead of single words, then you will automatically learn the grammar. Think about it – as a child, you learned the grammar of your native language without having to study grammatical rules. That’s why speaking the language became natural and easy. If you travel around the world, you will find many people who have studied English for many years but are not able to speak it. Why? Because they have studied grammar and vocabulary, instead of practicing to speak the language. And the same is true for the German language even more – because the grammar is so complex. Even German people can become confused about grammar if they start to think about the rules – but if they don’t think about these rules, speaking the right way is of course completely natural to them.

If you are looking for german language courses, then read this article first. In the end, it does not matter how big and reputable a language school is – it matters what you get from it and how easy and fast it will make the process of language acquisition.
Many people think that they will get a good learning experience when they sign up for one of the major schools – the reasoning behind it is that if so many people sign up for their courses, there must be something to it.
And of course – these language schools do have well-designed coursework. But at the same time, learning by visiting an actual school building is actually a not so effective way of learning a language. A lot of time gets wasted just on going there and coming back a couple of times a week.
What’s more – there often are discussions and clarifications when some student does not understand a certain topic. This is good for the particular individual, but it slows down the learning process of the entire class dramatically. Many times, clarifications will be given on things that you are clear about already – simply because someone else doesn’t understand the subject properly.
They also tend to be quite expensive, and you will still have to do the largest part of your learning effort at home on your own.
In the time of the internet, nobody really needs to attend a language class anymore – it can all be done online. A lot faster, more efficient and also cheaper. With these kinds of German language courses, you can learn at your own pace. There often are also tutors who will help you to resolve individual questions and explain to you exactly what you want to know in a very fast manner. So you really get the best of both worlds.
To conclude this article, I want to leave you with one of the most valuable pieces of advice that I have ever been given when it comes to learning German: always learn phrases, not vocabulary!
This is something that so many people get totally wrong, because it is taught that way in school. But you really do not need to learn single words – instead, you want to learn phrases, because phrases are the building blogs of spoken language. It is a much faster way of mastering a language, particularly a language like German where there are many complicated grammatical rules.
