How can I add German Umlauts and special characters to my computer?

I am not after any german lessons, I speak and write the language very wellI. I would just like to be able to use those characters when contacting my German friends. Is there a site where could download just those few typically German letters?

Go to "Start" – All Programs – Accessories – System Tools – Character Map – send a shortcut to your desktop. You’ll find all typically German and many other characters.

Fluent German Speakers : How long did it take for you to become german?

I started taking Rosetta Stone German
nearly a month ago. I know a few words, but obviously not alot.
And I was just wondering,
How long did you take german lessons, until you finally saw improvement?

I actually got fluent without any lessons – just growing up in Germany. I would say by age six I was pretty fluent ….

But I guess you want to know how long it takes to become fluent in a language that is not your native language. Well, it varies: it depends on how easy the foreign language comes to you, how much effort you put into it, and how intensely you are exposed to it. The more you are surrounded by the language, the faster you’ll learn.
For me, it usually took living in a country for at least a couple of month (after having studied the language for a while) to become fluent.
Most students that come to a foreign country and go to school there take about half a year to be fluent, even without any previous knowledge.

Was Princess Diana a clever pupil at school geography lessons if she confused a Greek family with a German one?

Princess Diana said she "should never have married into a German family" during her divorce from Prince Charles, her lawyer said in book extracts published by a newspaper on Sunday.

I’ll wager she was often the one standing at the back of the class with a pointy hat (upon which the letter D is clearly visible) on her head. But let us be fair Mr Churchill, she got it partly right. German, Greek/Danish. I would award her 50%, which was a pass when I went to school. But never-the-less, indeed she was, a dill.

German Lessons

Watch as I take SpeedyConKiwi’s good teaching out onto the streets of Germany and totally butcher the language. (Or give up and just speak English at people who don’t understand it.)

Oh, and I know there’s a typo in ‘weird’ – I only noticed it after uploading…
